Triathlon ... Why not?

You have probably heard about this sport or even seen one or another competition on the sports channels, and there is always the question: But ... What does this discipline really consist of? Why is it so demanding and exclusive?

What is a triathlon

Initially it was a challenge between US Marines, who began competing with each other at 1978, on the island of Hawaii. Others say that it originated in France during the 20-30 years of the last century.

Whatever its origin, today a discipline has been set up that contemplates the combination of three exclusive sports activities: Swimming, Cycling and Marathon, in the same order and without interruption between one test and another. Once started, the chronometer does not stop until the end.


La swimming it must be done in "open" waters; This is in the open sea, lakes, rivers or swamps.

El Cycling It is done on asphalt surface. It is the most controversial part of the competition because it is where, in general, the incidents that may occur throughout the test occur.

El marathon o Foot race it is the final part and perhaps the one that allows that there are more and more adepts to this type of competitions; However, not many of those who start arrive precisely at this "easy" portion of the discipline.

The other characteristic of this competition is that external aid is not allowed, unlike other disciplines where an external team is reporting progress to each competitor individually and where they support them throughout the test (mechanics, etc.). Here everyone must demonstrate "what is done".

Types of triathlon

There are five types of tests considered as triathlon, varying the distance to travel in each of the disciplines that comprise it. Namely:


  • Sprint. 750 meters of swimming, 20 kilometers of cycling and 5 kilometers of marathon. The ideal test for those who start in this exclusive world.
  • Olympic. 1500 meters of swimming, 40 kilometers of cycling and 10 kilometers of marathon. It is the "official" test that takes place in the Olympic Games.
  • Half Ironman (middle distance). 1900 meters of swimming, 90 kilometers of cycling and 21 kilometers of marathon.
  • Long distance. 4000 meters of swimming, 130 kilometers of cycling and 30 kilometers of marathon.
  • Ironman. 3800 meters of swimming, 180 kilometers of cycling and 42 kilometers of marathon.

The test is developed independently of the weather conditions that are occurring along the same, and is one of its features: nothing suspends it once started.
